Come out to this 100% volunteer run event for an ode to bluegrass and folk music!
In its 13thyear, the Hopping John has a plethora of activities for the family with musical hay rides, family square dancing, cake walk, musical fun and more.
The meat of the event includes workshops, the Fiddle Showcase, the Ballad Singing Workshop, a cook-off and of course dancing!!!
The artists aren’t there just to play but also to compete. There are several contests that include bragging rights and prizes. These are broken down by type including Old Time, Bluegrass and Non-traditional but also by the instrument; Fiddle, Mandolin, etc. Youth competitions exist as well. And of course the event wouldn’t be complete without the Hoppin John Cooking Competition- this will take place at 5:30 pm Saturday, September 14th and the winner takes $50! The cook-off is a play on the event’s name, because most everyone knows a tasty version of the dish.
Other events include;
A facilitated old-timey Gypsy (SWING) Jazz Jam, with Gabriel Pelli of the Onyx Club Boys– Friday at 3pm.
An quilt raffle will be going on silently in the background.
Shape Note singing of hymns from the Sacred Harp on Sat morning
And LOTS of dancing- clogging, square dancing, flatfooting, two stepping and family style.
